Harrison Barnes Hosts Holidays With Harrison with 15 Youth at adidas Sport Performance Store on December 18
On December 18, Warriors forward Harrison Barnes hosted 15 deserving boys and girls for his second annual Holidays with Harrison shopping spree at the adidas Sport Performance Store in San Francisco where he provided each child a $500 gift card to use to shop. The 15 boys and girls were winners of an essay and video contest held over the past month on Warriors.com and were able to shop side-by-side with their favorite Warriors player.
“It’s great to be out here at the adidas store in San Francisco to help these kids shop for some nice holiday gifts for themselves and for their parents and siblings too,” said Barnes. “This time of year, a new shirt or some shoes can go a long way.”
To start the event, the 15 youth and their chaperones joined Barnes on a chartered bus ride to the adidas Sport Performance Store from the Warriors Practice Facility. They received a new Golden State Warriors t-shirt to wear and a chance to become acquainted with Barnes while sharing some pizza on the bus ride over. 10-year old Stephanie from the East Oakland Youth Development Center was so thankful for Harrison’s generosity that she became overwhelmed with emotion when meeting Harrison.
“I started crying when I met Harrison because I was just so happy that this was happening,” she explained. “This is probably the best day of my life.”
The children arrived at the adidas Sport Performance Store and were greeted by the Warrior Girls, who handed them a large adidas shopping bag and encouraged the kids to have a good time. The boys and girls browsed the displays of the store, picking up new adidas sneakers, sweatshirts, pants and Warriors gear to enjoy and share this holiday season.
“Growing up in Ames (Iowa), I took part in Shop with a Cop, where underprivileged kids could shop with the police department,” explained Barnes. “I know how happy these kids are to have these new adidas clothes and shoes for the holidays.”
After crossing off their wish lists and stuffing their shopping bags, the kids went to the register to find Harrison at the checkout counter, personally paying for all of their new holiday gifts.
“Words can’t express what Harrison has done for these kids today,” said East Oakland Youth Development Center CEO Regina Jackson. “He has given these kids this amazing experience and new clothes and shoes that, frankly, they almost never receive.”
Holidays with Harrison is part of the Warriors Plays for the Holidays community outreach campaign and part of the NBA Cares Season of Giving and #NBAGiveBIG, with the Warriors organization and every Warriors player participating in events this holiday season to help lift the spirits of local families and youth in the Bay Area.
No spirit was lifted higher than Malik’s, a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland who couldn’t stop smiling throughout the shopping spree and was so thankful to Harrison and adidas for making his holiday wishes come true.
“I’m so happy right now to be here right now with Harrison,” Malik said. “This definitely has made my year.”
