With a handful of the league’s top players showing up to games in suits instead of jerseys due to injury, it’s important to understand the rules and regulations that NBA teams most follow when a player gets injured.

  • Each team is required to maintain 12 players on its Active List and to have a minimum of 8 players dressed, eligible, and able to participate in all Exhibition and Regular Season games. A team may periodically carry 11 players on its Active List, but for no more than 2 consecutive weeks at a time.

  • A team may carry a maximum of 3 players on its Inactive List. Each team is required to maintain 1 player on its Inactive List for all Regular Season games. A team may periodically carry zero players on its Inactive List, but for no more than 2 consecutive weeks at a time.

  • There is no minimum period of time that a player must spend on the Inactive List, once moved there. (Accordingly, the five-game waiting period that previously applied to the Injured List has been eliminated with respect to the Inactive List.) There are no limitations on the number of times a player can be moved back-and-forth between the Active List and the Inactive List.

  • No roster moves are allowed within the 60-minute period prior to the publicly-announced start time of a game.

  • Only players on the Active List may dress and participate in pre-game warm-ups that occur within the period commencing 20 minutes prior to the publicly-announced start time of a game. Inactive List players must be in street clothes during this period and during the game.
